The ViewEdinburgh Review
The Cuckoo’s Nest is a trendy, little den with surprisingly low prices to boot and there's always a neat queue of people outside.
The Venue
Small, new and trendy, The Cuckoo's Nest is fashionably decorated with red floral wall paper, modern chandeliers, mirrors and artwork. Furnished with a wall bench running along a couple of walls, couches and tables, the effect is 60S and 70s retro with a modern twist.
It has a large basement with more seating than upstairs and it's available for private hire as well as being used as a DJ club at weekends. It has its own bar and although there's not a lot of dancefloor space people still stick around until late.
Outside, metal chairs and tables with red cushions allow you to bask in the sun.
The People
Targeting students with its low prices and drink deals, The Cuckoo’s Nest still manages to look far more upmarket than your regular student bar. It attracts a young and friendly crowd and small groups gather here for a drink or two from late afternoon through to the evening. A few older faces can be seen as well and the place looks inviting enough for any age group to be lured in.
The Drink
A few cocktails appear on an improvised list on the mirror at the back of the bar. It's made up of mostly twisted classics. One of the most unusual is the Cuckoo Cola Mojito made of Havana Club, gomme (sugar syrup), cola and lime juice and then there's the refreshing Palm Springs with its fresh mint, passoa (passion fruit liqueur), Mount Gay Rum, lime, apple and cranberry. It's bargain basement prices here with cocktails all priced at a mere £4. Alternatively you can quaff a selection of beers including bottled Tiger, Brahma and Peroni for £2.90. Students are entitled to a range of discounts throughout the night, making prices even cheaper.
The Food
Its short menu offers a good selection of student favourites, like the monster homemade cheese burger for £5.50, chili beef nachos for £5 and rib-eye steak with chips and grilled tomatoes for £6.50. Alternatively you can go for a snack for between £2.50 and £4 or a thick cut sandwich between £3 and £3.50.
The Last Word
The Cuckoo's Nest is a great place that's not just for students. If you've little cash to spare, this space has the looks without the huge prices.
