The ViewEdinburgh Review
Between Edinburgh’s notorious pubic triangle of lap dance clubs and the art college sits the Blue Blazer - a real ale drinker’s paradise.
The Venue
The Blue Blazer looks like any generic upmarket old man’s pub. It’s cosy, clean, a little on the small side and usually crammed with people. Wooden features provide it with a classy feel whilst walls decked out with wide bar mirrors give the impression it’s bigger than it really is. There’s plenty for the eye to take in, not least, a selection of shelves which are home to an impressive collection of empty malt whisky boxes.
The People
Students, professionals, tradesmen and pensioners all rub shoulders in the Blue Blazer and despite its reputation as a bit of an oldies ale den, women won’t feel like an endangered species. You’ll get a friendly welcome, whoever you are, and the laid back atmosphere lends itself to free flowing chat between strangers.
The Drink
There’s a great selection of guest cask ales here. Expect to see everything from Bitter and Twisted to Abbot Ale with most pints coming in at about £2.90. There’s also a gin menu which is a nice touch and a good selection of malts for those in need of a stiffer tipple.
The Last Word
If it’s a pint of real ale or gin and tonic you are after, then this is the place for you. Just don’t get too comfy though, a couple of drinks in and you’ll not want to leave, which is something your wallet may not thank you for considering the cheaper options nearby.
