Now this is what I’m talking about- A nice, cosy cocktail bar that serves good food and isn’t hugely expensive. I’m not much of a New Town girl as my hair isn’t messy enough and I’d rather shoot myself in the face then wear Ugg boots, but this is a great spot for lunch, for a date or for a few drinks before a night out. The service is really good, and whenever I’ve eaten here the food has been good quality- try the steak, stilton flatbread, it’s really really good. The cocktail list is a great mixture of classics and in house mixes, and they start from £3.50. The wine list is also really good, although I thought the wines by the glass were quite expensive. I’d definitely recommend 56 North as a chilled, comfy bar to settle down and have a few drinks in on an afternoon or in the evening.
Had a great dinner for me and my friends. The place has clearly had effort spent on it as the food and drinks were well presented and the service was very good. The only small down side was as the sun went down it was cold with the outdoor windows open. £3.50 cocktails is also a major plus point. I'll be back
I went to 56 North for my birthday this year and had dinner with a group of friends.
The service was great - very friendly and attentive - and the cocktail list was impressive.
It was busy and the food took a while but was worth the wait. Enjoyed it and we will be back.
I purchased a jug of Pimms for £20 to enjoy with fiends on the outside seating area, it was a very warm and sunny evening.
The minute we sat down, we were very rudely asked to move inside since outdoor serving stops at 10pm.
Everybody else sitting outside were asked the same, and the inside tables quickly filled up. But we were there to enjoy the sun and decided to stay outside for a while. The waiter then approached us and insisted that we went inside.
We asked if we could either get our drinks in plastic cups to take away, or get our money back.
The staff reacted to this by taking our full jug of pimms, refusing to give it back and refusing to give our money back as well.
This hostility spoilt my evening, and I am puzzled as to how a bar can stay in business with this style of management.
I will certainly never return to this place, and neither will my friends with whom I shared this unpleasant experience.
I'm a bit of a regular being an Edinburgh Uni Student. The food is always good and the portions are generous. It is one of the few bars in the area that does really good cocktails. On the bad side, it can be difficult to get a seat at lunch time and it is more expensive than the bars around (although students do get 25% off). That said it is one of my favourite bars in the area for lunch, dinner or just drinks.
I ordered a platter the last time I was in having a few sunshine drinks, can't quite say how much it set us back, but for what we got it was shocking. We waited ages also, was a bank holiday though.
